Protesters block R66
Community at uMlalazi were claiming that they did not get the employment opportunities promised by the contractors
EARLY morning commuters travelling to eShowe from Nkwalini on the R66 and the P230 were delayed by protest action for a few hours on Friday morning.
A small group of community members living in the vicinty of the P230 and R66 intersection at uMlalazi were claiming that they did not get the employment opportunities promised by the contractors rehabilitating the R66 between eShowe and Nkwalini.
They took to the road, using almost anything they could find including a ceramic toilet bowl, to block all traffic travelling to eShowe from the north.
They also torched plastic crates in the middle of the road.
Persons using the R66 to eShowe from Ginigindlovu were not affected.
A heavy police, RTI and uMlalazi municipal presence was quickly on the scene and the protesters had dispersed by 9.30am allowing the traffic to flow freely.
