Pelican Island poachers net kite board

Kite boarders Natus Berning and Quinton Benningfield came across the hefty green net while catching waves on Wednesday, with one board becoming ensnared in the net.

JUST days after a huge gill net was pulled from the water near the Casuarinas beach in Richards Bay harbour, another large poachers’ net has been found at Pelican Island.

Kite boarders Natus Berning and Quinton Benningfield came across the hefty green net while catching waves on Wednesday, with one board becoming ensnared in the net.

While totally different to the customary Chinese-made nets smuggled in from Mozambique, this net did contain a number of dead fish.

Besides stealing marine resources, those who lay the nets are also putting lives at risk.

A bather entangled in the nets could easily drown, while a boat might capsize from the weight of the net if it got caught up in the motors.
