eSikhawini Power Sub-station explosion leaves residents in the dark
BOOM! Boom! Boom!
Three loud bangs echoed through eSikhaleni seconds before residents were plunged into total darkness on Tuesday evening following a massive explosion at an electrical sub-station shortly after 7.30pm.
‘I was walking home from my study session when I heard a deafening noise. My heart almost stopped because I thought it was a bomb,’ said 18-year-old pupil Malusi Ntuli.
Firefighters and police promptly responded.
According to residents technicians had been working on the sub-station earlier that day.
City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager Mdu Ncalane, said a transformer exploded.
‘Our technicians, together with Eskom, are working around the clock to fix the problem and a mobile transformer is being brought in from the South Coast,’ he said.
Ncalane assured residents the explosion had nothing to do with work done earlier in the day.
Electricity supply has since been restored.
