Murderer sentenced to 53 years behind bars

While fleeing after committing an armed robbery, the accused fired shots over his shoulder, killing a bystander

THE Mtunzini High Court on Friday convicted and sentenced 21-year-old Sandile ‘So’ Gcwabaza to 53 years in prison for murder and robbery.

The court heard testimony from witnesses of the murder that occurred in 2013 in Esikhaleni.

According to a statement issued by police, a woman was robbed by three unknown gunmen in Port Durnford.

‘The woman screamed for help and community members in the area chased the criminals,’ said Major Thulani Zwane, KZN SAPS spokesperson.

‘While fleeing, they randomly fired several shots that resulted in the death of 31-year-old Musa Zibane.’

A case of armed robbery and murder was opened. The following year, Gcwabaza was arrested for armed robbery and murder and was subsequently linked to housebreaking and other ongoing robbery cases.

He was sentenced to 20 years for murder, 15 years for both charges of robbery and three years for housebreaking.
