BREAKING NEWS: MEC suspends social workers amid fraud allegations

Social workers were escorted out of the premises by security officials.

THERE was pandemonium at the Department of Social Development (DSD) Lower Umfolozi office in Empangeni earlier today when all social workers were immediately suspended and escorted out of the building.

This follows a meeting convened by DSD MEC Weziwe Thusi to discuss allegations of fraud, corruption and abuse within the department.

Tempers flared during this morning’s address resulting in the immediate suspension of all social workers who were subsequently escorted out of the premises by security officials.

There have been allegations of fraud relating to foster care grants while community members seeking assistance have labelled certain social workers as ‘rude’ and ‘unfriendly’.

A 60-day investigation will be conducted.
