Offices go up in flames at ZAC Mine

Attempts to contact mine management for comment were unsuccessful, however production at the mine was shut down as a result of the damage.

VIOLENT scenes played out at the Zululand Anthracite Colliery near Ulundi in the early hours of Thursday morning as protesters set offices and trucks alight.

Unknown suspects cut the fence enclosing the offices at around 1am, terrorising security guards and two female employees who were fortunate to escape without injury.

At least one truck and several offices were reduced to ashes by the blaze, destroying admin records and office equipment.

According to sources at the mine, the community is unhappy that the company cannot provide all of them with jobs.

‘Problems started early in January,’ said the source, who asked to remain anonymous.

‘There have been protests in the past, but never as bad as this. Right now we are just waiting for something to happen.’

Attempts to contact mine management for comment were unsuccessful, however production at the mine was shut down as a result of the damage.
