Thirty girls pregnant in one school

30 Masakhane High School pupils pregnant

IN a bid to spread the message against escalating teenage pregnancies at schools, uThungulu District Health officials visited Masakhane High School in Ndabayakhe Reserve outside Empangeni.

The main aim for this visit was to warn the pupils about the dangers of falling pregnant while their bodies are not yet ready to carry babies.

It is reported Masakhane is facing one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy, with a record 30 pregnant school girls at the school this year alone.

Engaging with the pupils, uThungulu Health intended to aggressively sensitise them about a variety of youth-friendly programmes offered by health facilities in the district.

Local Mabanga Clinic has begun a programme it calls a ‘happy hour’, during which young people are given priority to access whatever services they require from the clinic, and also offers them counselling sessions if necessary.
