UPDATE: Student’s death investigated

Unizulu male student laid to rest

INVESTIGATIONS are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of a male student at the University of Zululand in KwaDlangezwa last Sunday.

Deaths on campus are tragic. Investigations into the causes of this incident are ongoing,’ said Unizulu Vice Chancellor Institutional Support, Prof Neil Garrod.

Not only is the institution investigating the matter, but the police are also conducting a full inquiry.

The 24-year-old student, known as Xaba, died at Ngwelezana Hospital after he apparently jumped off the PWV building.

According to Mtunzini police spokesperson Lt Sibusisbo Guma, the incident happened when Xaba attempted to flee from campus security after he was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend.

Guma confirmed his family was informed and that they identified the body.

The third-year education student was laid to rest over the weekend.

Xaba’s death followed the death of a female student who was apparently raped and killed two weeks ago.
