No iNcema harvest this year

The suspension applies to all Ezemvelo areas from the Mlalazi Nature Reserve in Mtunzini to areas in the far north.

OWING to the continuing drought, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has, in consultation with local communities, suspended the harvesting of iNcema (juncus kraussil ) this season.

The suspension applies to all Ezemvelo areas from the Mlalazi Nature Reserve in Mtunzini to areas in the far north.

The harvesting season for iNcema is normally in May.

Meanwhile, Prof Jean Simonis from the University of Zululand’s Hydrology Department will research ‘The potential impact of annual harvesting on the absorption of nitrogen and phosphorous from polluted water using wetland plants’.

This study will assist Ezemvelo with wetland management within the reserves.
