Unizulu open day empowers thousands

High school pupils exposed to various career paths at the University of Zululand on Thursday

THOUSANDS of high school pupils around KZN took advantage of the University of Zululand (Unizulu) Open Day event in KwaDlangezwa on Thursday.

About 70 schools from the uThungulu, Zululand, uMzinyathi, uMkhanyakude, Ilembe, uMlazi and Pinetown districts flocked in and were exposed to various career paths.

The career fair afforded pupils, especially matriculants, a chance to make informed decisions about careers they want to apply for and pursue.

Dozens of exhibitors provided professional career advice and dished out information leaflets to the pupils, including information on bursaries, educational loans and career opportunities.

Exhibitors included 45 academic departments from the university and 13 external exhibitors such as the Central Applications Office, Legal Aid SA, Tongaat Hullet, Science Expo and the National Financial Aid Scheme.

The event provided an informal setting where learners could receive information about programmes at the university and the career opportunities attached to each qualification.

Khula High School Grade 12 Mandisa Mthembu, said she was overwhelmed with the information she received, which will help her make a wise career decision.

‘I have looked around the different stalls and was impressed with the level of assistance. I now know what I need to do to further my studies,’ she said.

Nkosiyenzile Dube, a pupil from Ingobamakhosi High School in Gingindlovu said: ‘This is very important to us as Grade 12 learners as we got all the information we needed. From now on I will work even harder to pass my matric well so I can better my chances to study next year,’
