More than 30 suspects arrested during greenbelt raids

MORE than 30 suspects were arrested in the Meerensee greenbelts following an early morning operation conducted by the SAPS, the Meerensee CPF and Northern Region Protection Services (NRPS).
Col Ngobese and Col Sosibo were present with their teams during the swoop on Friday, which commenced before the crack of dawn.
The joint crime prevention initiative is aimed at sending out a message of ‘Zero Crime Tolerance’.
The greenbelts are becoming increasingly problematic owing to more and more people taking habitation in the areas, making fires, hunting and leaving raw sewerage and litter.
Indigenous trees are being destroyed by wood gatherers.
It is also becoming a hideout for criminals, illegal immigrants and drug dealers.
Illegal dumping by local companies and individuals is also threatening the environment.
Such activities are prohibited by the City’s Environmental Health and Solid Waste bylaws.
