Community centre for Mgabhi Village
The new Mgabhi Wenguqa cultural centre will be a major benefit to the Mgabhi Village community members
THE lives of the people of Mgabhi Village, ward 3 of uMthonjaneni in the Melmoth district, will be changed for the better.
This thanks to a multi-purpose community centre to be established.
uThungulu Civic Associations Chairperson and founder of Phumelela Educational Training Projects, DM Mhlongo, uThungulu Mayor Thembeka Mchunu, uMthonjaneni Mayor MN Dlangamandla, ward 3 Counsellor SM Khuzwayo, Izinduna and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) Commissioner CT Mampane recently conducted a sod-turning ceremony where the new centre will be built.
The facility will consist of a community hall to be used as a mobile clinic where social workers can work from, a mobile police station, as well as a community development hub where, among others, women will learn cooking, sewing and crafts skills and where the youth will be provided with information on careers.
Mhlongo said he is grateful to the NLDTF for making his dream of establishinbg the Mgabhi Wenguqa cultural centre a reality.
‘This is a cultural centre where our people are going to be empowered with skills.
‘This serves as a commemoration of our hero, the late Inkosi Mgabhi Wenguqa of the Mhlongo clan, ’ Mhlongo stressed.
uThungulu District name change
Mchunu said the district was pleased to be enriched with so much history since the Mhlongo clan is known for being the people where King Shaka’s mother, Queen Nandi came from.
‘As a district we are busy connecting the dots of our history. We are soon changing the name of the district to Inkosi Cetshwayo District,’ Mchunu added.
Mchunu also stressed the importance of ensuring that all wards have fully functional ‘war rooms’ to serve as centres where community problems such as HIV/Aids, poverty, elderly people’s needs and child abuse can be addressed.
Mampane commended Mhlongo for his resilience and the vision he showed in ensuring this centre becomes a reality.
