Life sentence for child rapist

The child was walking home from school in Madaka Reserve, Empangeni, when she was grabbed, forced into the 28-year-old's house and raped

STATE prosecutors have ensured that a child predator will remain behind bars for the rest of his life.
Sifiso Mthethwa was recently sentenced to life imprisonment by the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.
In September last year, the child was walking home from school in Madaka Reserve, Empangeni, when she was grabbed, forced into the 28-year-old’s house and raped.
It emerged in court that the child managed to break free and escape during the incident and informed her mother of what happened.
The man was arrested and charged with two counts of rape the following day.
The man denied the incident, claiming the child was his girlfriend and, contrary to evidence of a medical report, that no intercourse took place between them.
Magistrate N Nkwanya found the court could not deviate from the minimum sentence of life imprisonment, citing the nature of the incident, the fact that the child was clearly in school uniform at the time and the psychologically traumatic experience the victim and her family underwent.
