Police fight rising tide of sexual offences
Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit secured seven life sentences worth 234 years’ imprisonment

IN the month marking Child Protection Week, the KZN Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit secured seven life sentences worth 234 years’ imprisonment and made 195 arrests.
Alarmingly, from a local perspective, more than two sexual assault or rape cases have been reported each day at the Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) at Ngwelezana Hospital on average over the past year.
Of the 725 new cases reported, LifeLine Zululand reported that a whopping 63 percent of them involved youth and children aged 18 years or younger.
The FCS said statistics showed another 603 new sexual abuse and domestic violence cases at SAPS sites.
‘The unit worked tirelessly tracking, tracing and arresting suspects and sending well-prepared dockets for prosecution to solve cases of rape, sexual assault, attempted rape, kidnapping and abduction,’ the SAPS said in a statement last week.
