Pioneer councillors recognised
The celebration of 16 years of local government ‘has raised the need to recognise those councillors who have worked tirelessly since the dawn of democracy
AT the closing ceremony for the 16 Years Celebration Flame Tour, awards were presented to councillors who had served on the uThungulu District Council since the inception of local government.
According to a media release, the celebration of 16 years of local government ‘has raised the need to recognise those councillors who have worked tirelessly since the dawn of democracy to ensure that basic services were delivered to the communities of the District’.
Two categories of councillors were acknowledged during the closing gala dinner and they received trophies and certificates.
• First Category: 2000-2016 – Those who are still serving since the inception of the democratic local government elections:
Cllr TVB Mchunu, Cllr ESW Mthimkhulu, Cllr MM Mbokazi, Cllr IJ Naidoo, Cllr M Simelane, Cllr BV Mthethwa, Cllr V Gumbi, Cllr VM Xulu, Cllr QT Xulu, Cllr Cyril Ndwalane, Cllr Stan Larkan, Cllr Musa Xulu, Cllr BT Mnqayi, Cllr JD Vilakazi, Cllr JK Powell, Cllr EA Talmage
• Second Category: 1996-2000 – Pioneers of Local Government:
Cllr TVB Mchunu, Cllr BV Mthethwa, Cllr HC de Villiers, Cllr FBP Mpongose, Cllr MJ Vermaak, Cllr DJ Moffatt, Cllr JM Buthelezi, Cllr MA Kunene, Cllr C Madlopha, Cllr EF Mbatha, Cllr C Buthelezi, Cllr V Gumbi.
