Heavy trucks ban in Bay CBD
Some 2 000 trucks, buses, articulated vehicles and abnormal loads enter Richards Bay each day.
SEVERE restrictions have been placed on heavy vehicles entering Richards Bay, with a number of routes through the town’s business centre now banned from use to prevent further damage to road infrastructure.
Some 2 000 trucks, buses, articulated vehicles and abnormal loads enter Richards Bay each day, either via the John Ross Parkway or Main Road 231/R619 (North Central Arterial) past Brackenham.
New ‘no entry’ signs have been erected at access points into the town and from now the only routes open to heavy vehicles will be:
• From north – N2 along P231 along Heliumhoogte and Alumina Allee to the John Ross Parkway;
• From south – on N2, then along John Ross Parkway;
• From east – from Meerensee along Dune Road then on John Ross Parkway;
• From west – from Empangeni along John Ross Parkway.
Banned access
No trucks will be permitted to enter the Richards Bay CBD and new signs have been placed at the following intersections:
• North Central Arterial/Via Davillia;
• North Central Arterial/John Ross;
• East Central Arterial/John Ross;
• West Central Arterial/BHP entrance;
• Guldengracht/Chalk Line
Temporary stop
Only delivery trucks will be allowed in the CBD, but may not overnight.
The only overnight facility will be at the new truck stop still under construction on Harbour Arterial.
Trucks may park now at the temporary truck stop at the traffic signals at the John Ross Parkway/ Harbour Arterial intersection.
Weighbridge
In addition, the Department of Transport (DoT) has applied to the City to lease a property for the establishment of a weighbridge facility in Richards Bay.
The two hectare property (Remainder of Erf 5333 Richards Bay) is located along the John Ross Parkway just after the Nsezi Bridge.
The land will not be sold to the DoT as it is earmarked for future port expansion.
The need to establich the weighbridge is to control overloading of heavy vehicles and consequent damage to roads.
The lease agreement is for a period of nine years and 11 months, at market related rental subject to annual escalations.
