Mtunzini man sentenced to 40 years behind bars

The incidents were uncovered when the mother of the 10-year-old victim asked her daughter to undergo a virginity test, but the child refused.

AN Mtunzini man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after repeatedly raping a minor.

The Empangeni Regional Court on Friday sentenced Richard Babane Shandu, 50, to two 20-year prison terms for two counts of rape.

The incidents were uncovered when the mother of the 10-year-old victim asked her daughter to undergo a virginity test in the Obanjeni area, Mtunzini, but the child refused.

Upon the mother’s insistence, the child broke down and told her mother that she was raped by the accused on two different occasions and was threatened to be killed should she tell anyone.

A case of rape was opened on 10 June 2012 at Mtunzini SAPS and the case was transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

The KZN SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa welcomed the sentence.

‘We thank the parents for their cooperation in reporting the matter to the police and not to take the law into their hands. This will send a strong message to other culprits, that you cannot escape the long arm of the Law,’ he said.
