First aid crash course empowers teachers

Amangwe empowers rural teachers with first aid course

FIFTEEN rural crèche teachers in KwaMthethwa and Sokhulu received basic first aid training at Amangwe Village this month, thanks to funding by the US Embassy.

The teachers are members of the successful Amangwe Toy Village Library – a clever, creative initiative to ensure that children of member schools are continuously encouraged to learn through play, with a variety of educational toys regularly rotated between schools.

Amangwe Village Manager Erna Steynberg says empowerment is key to ensure the safety of children cared for far away from hospitals and clinics in areas where transport is not readily available.

‘We are very grateful to the embassy for enabling us to provide the capacity building Early Childhood Development services.’

She also expressed her gratitude towards Indlelo Yempilo Consulting, which presented the five-day training programme, with theoretical and practical components.

Each crèche also received a fully equipped first aid box, supplied by Mahlamba Trading and Projects, to ensure that ‘treatment tools’ are at hand.

This training will empower teachers to treat minor cuts and bruises while children explore and learn.
