New education MEC cracks the whip

Warning those teachers who refuse to work, Dlungwane said he is going to remove them and replace them with those willing to perform their duties.

ADDRESSING SADTU Provincial General Council (PGC) delegates last Friday, new KZN Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane didn’t mince his words when he told teachers they had get their act together, or be fired.

The delegates gathered at Meet Mekaar Resorts on Friday and Saturday to discuss matters affecting education in the province.

Warning those teachers who refuse to work, Dlungwane said he is going to remove them and replace them with those willing to perform their duties.

He said SADTU had to ensure teachers were in class teaching for at least seven hours a day.

‘Teachers must protect the pupils, who in turn must respect the teachers,’ Dlungwane stressed.

He further promised he would to do his best to ensure all critical vacant posts are filled to deal with the negative impacts caused by teacher shortages.

‘The Education Department seek to have a democratic state which empowers African children. Let us stop talking and instead begin to implement the government’s education policies.’

Dlungwane added his department was going to guarantee infrastructure development and maintenance in schools and was committed to engage with teacher organisations on a number of issues affecting education and learning.

‘I challenge the SADTU leadership to engage with us, although we might not always agree on everything.

‘I believe in the power of persuasion. Without your support, we won’t be able to deliver on our mandate,’ Dlungwane said.
