Teen drowns in Nyalazi River

The 19-year-old drowned while trying to help someone retrieve her water container

KWAMSANE police are investigating a drowning incident after a 19-year-old on Tuesday died while fetching water from the Nyalazi River.

According to KwaMsane SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, the teen, Siboniso Sibiya, and his younger brother had gone to the river at about 5pm to collect water.

It is reported that a fellow community member, also collecting water, lost her container in the river and Sibiya waded into the river to retrieve it.

Unable to swim, he drowned while attempting to help the woman.

Sibiya’s body was recovered yesterday (Wednesday) morning by a search and rescue team.

The incident is under police investigation.
