Help save birds under threat

Birdlife SA is appealing to the public for assistance in fighting for the future of threatened bird species

IN order to carry out its fight for our country’s most threatened birds and their habitats, Birdlife SA is appealing for help from bird lovers.

Birdlife SA’s Policy and Advocacy Programme works to safeguard threatened species, but needs funding to carry out its mandate.

The organisation is in the midst of a battle against the construction of a windfarm in the Lesotho highlands.

Should this project go ahead, it could lead to the extinction of Maloti-Drakensberg’s Bearded Vultures.

Further afield in the Dullstroom area, Birdlife SA is, with pro-bono legal assistance, opposing mining that it says ‘would destroy wetlands critical for an exceptional array of animals and plants, and that define the beauty of the area’.

‘Our unspoilt ecosystems provide us with clean air, water, food, and a tolerable climate,’ said the organisation.

‘But they are also home to our birds; birds that connect us to the natural world no matter where we are.’

To support Birdlife SA’s Policy and Advocacy Programme, donations can be made to BLSA, First National Bank, account number: 62067506281, branch code: 25065500, reference: your surname – P&A.
