Overturned taxi leaves 14 critically injured near the Khula Village

Police urge people not to speed and to have vehicles regularly checked for roadworthiness

FOURTEEN people were critically injured when the taxi transporting them from Mtubatuba to St Lucia overturned earlier today (Monday).

The accident occurred at 9.45am near the Khula Village turn-off on the R618 and caused the closure of the road while emergency services attended to the injured.

The passengers – four men, eight women and two children – were treated on scene before being transported to Hlabisa Hospital for further medical care.

According to preliminary police reports, the left rear side shaft broke, causing the driver to lose control.

Mtubatuba SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Justice Hlabisa, urged motorists not to speed, especially when carrying passengers, and to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and is regularly inspected.
