Richards Bay Flying Squad shows compassion

Last October the unit won a Tracker award as the best coordination and recovery of stolen and hijacked vehicles outfit in South Africa

THE Richards Bay Flying Squad chose to give back to the community after scooping provincial and national awards for their stellar performance.

Last October the unit won a Tracker award as the best coordination and recovery of stolen and hijacked vehicles outfit in South Africa.

They were presented with a certificate and trophy, as well as

R10 000 which was to be donated to a charity of their choice.

After much deliberation and consultations with the uMhlathuze Municipality, Flying Squad Commander Gumede said they chose Celukuthula Community Development, an NGO in eSikhaleni, as the recipient.

‘They have about 95 orphans who they take care of and help to educate. They do not receive any financial assistance and have to rely on fund-raising methods to keep afloat, but they are really struggling,’ said Gumede.

The Flying Squad, along with other police members, handed over the cheque to the organisation last Saturday.

Gumede said their award came as a result of teamwork and passion for the job.

‘We were really humbled because we did not expect to win an award, but we aim to continue to do our best to serve our communities.’
