FALSE NEWS: There will not be a ‘national lock down announcement’

The president’s spokesperson has denounced rumours regarding a national lock down

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko, has urged people to stop spreading false news regarding Covid-19.

Diko took to Twitter this afternoon (Saturday) in response to numerous viral social media posts detailing a national lock down today.

In one of the voice notes doing the rounds, a man is recorded as saying ‘he just got off the phone’ with a friend whose wife is a teacher at the school where the minister of health’s children attend.

The man further explains that it would be announced tonight that South Africa will be ‘in full lock down.’

‘Get your basic essentials. They are going to close down shopping malls. The only thing that will be left open is food shops.’

Diko confirmed that the president would not be addressing the nation on a national lock down tonight.

‘The National Command Council will meet in a scheduled meeting tomorrow to assess the implementation of the directives announced by the president last Sunday,’ he said.

The number of positive confirmed Coronavirus cases is at 240 as of today.

People who spread false news relating to Covid-19 could face hefty penalties or jail time.
