MAYOR of Pongola Local Municipality, Cllr Bawinile Nhlabathi last week visited various pension pay-out points to encourage social distancing in the long queues.
A Joint Operational Committee consisting of SAPS, SANDF, OSS, DOH, Zululand District Municipality councillors, environment practitioners, local councillors, disaster team, POP, DSD, SASSA and traffic departments participated during the campaign.
Mayor Nhlabathi said she had a critical role to ensure that the public follow all the rules during the Covid-19 outbreak.
‘As we double our efforts in response to the pandemic, our work expertise and actions are needed more than ever; we are supporting all stakeholders through constant information-sharing to help protect the public.
‘We have recognised that globally, social distancing has emerged as one of the most effective methods of slowing down the spread of the virus.’
All shopping centres were urged to monitor the number of customers entering their facilities. Retailers were also encouraged to introduce measures to mitigate against panic buying .
‘As we all are aware, Pongola forms part of the Lebombo SDI Corridor which acts as a gateway to Swaziland and Mozambique using its Golela and Onverwacht border gates.
‘Those borders are now closed, and SANDF are ensuring and enforcing that there are no people coming from and going to those neighbouring countries.
‘We urge all citizens to unite and play their part in curbing this pandemic and we are pleased that the majority have heeded the call and are in compliance with the lockdown regulations.’
