THE Department of Employment and Labour’s Inspection and Enforcement Service (IES) unit is gearing up to conduct more workplace inspections as companies resume operations under Level 4 of the Covid-19 lockdown.

This comes as many businesses continue to disregard health and safety regulations.

With more than 2 000 inspections conducted since the beginning of April, a total of 1 237 organisations were found to be non-compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), resulting in the issuing of contravention, improvement and prohibition notices.

Of the total inspections conducted, 411 were government- and or state-owned enterprises where the rate of compliance was 50%.

‘Given the fact that the virus is spreading substantially, it is of great concern especially at those employers where there are long queues or people congregating.

‘This is especially prevalent at government related workplaces.

‘We are shocked that many organisations are still struggling to comply with the OHS Act.

‘It should be every organisation’s habit.

‘No wonder we still have so many workplace accidents. Progressive organisations invest in the wellness of their employees,’ said Inspector General, Aggy Moiloa.
