Freak fire destroys truck delivering furniture

Cigarette butt tossed out of another vehicle believed to have been the cause

A FREAK fire destroyed a small flatbed truck and most of the furniture load it was carrying after a discarded cigarette butt apparently ignited a couch and the flames spread rapidly.

The incident happened shortly before 5.30 this (Saturday) afternoon on the John Ross Highway between the canal robots and the Medway intersection.

Noticing flames coming from the load bin on which a large amount of furniture was being carried for delivery, the driver and his assistant bravely stopped the burning truck and tried to save as much furniture as possible before the truck and the contents were totally destroyed.

City Fire & Rescue were quickly on scene but were unable to save the vehicle.

Ambulance medics treated the courageous driver for burns to his hands.
