PROTEST action has once again flared up in Mtubatuba this afternoon as residents demand upgrades to clinics, a police station, better access roads and running water.

They have also reportedly called for former Mtubatuba Mayor, Qhina Mkhwanazi, to be reinstated.

Violence erupted and a coal truck was torched – the second in two weeks – on the R618 in the Mvutshini area.

A hot spot for protest action which often turns violent, Mtubatuba has over the years been plagued by service delivery unrest which, at times, has seen riot action closing the N2.

The municipality has been placed under provincial administration on and off since 2012 and many cases of maladministration were probed.

Two weeks ago another coal truck was petrol-bombed, but Mayor Velangenkosi Gumede said it was not linked to protest action.
