Manguzi police investigate two hijackings
Responding to fake social media advertising led to vehicle hijacking
MANGUZI police have registered two recent cases of vehicle hijacking, and it is believed that both vehicles were taken across the Mozambican border.
A 37-year-old Secunda man became the first victim when he responded to a fake social media advertisement offering sofas for sale.

uMkhanyakude cluster police spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, said the seller told the man he would send his brother in Piet Retief to direct him to his house. ‘The victim, driving a Ford Ranger double cab with a trailer, went to Piet Retief to meet with the ‘brother’.’
‘When they reached Pongola, the passenger pulled out a firearm and ordered the victim to drive to Manguzi. At Manqakulana, he was ordered out of the vehicle and the hijacker drove off in his bakkie,’ said Mdletshe.
In the second incident, a motorist was hijacked at gunpoint by five unknown suspects in the Thengani area.
‘The victim was accosted shortly after he left his house,’ Mdletshe said.
‘The hijackers demanded his car keys. He was then tied up with rope and loaded into the back of his bakkie.
‘At the border fence they dropped him off and drove into Mozambique.’
