KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Ntuli, says he is aware of several liquor outlets in and around Empangeni that are defying the lockdown regulations.

Ntuli revealed this yesterday (Saturday) at Empangeni Rail during a police raid in which a store manager was arrested for illegally selling alcohol.

‘I wont divulge their identities now, but we know who they are.’

He said since the liquor ban was lifted earlier this month, he has noticed a significant increase in gender-based violence cases, while about 60 people have been killed in road accidents.

‘While the sale of alcohol was banned, we only had six accidents, but since the ban was lifted this increased to 72 in only two weeks.’
