Mhlathuze Water shuts disposal line to contain gypsum leak

MHLATHUZE Water has had to shut off its disposal line to enable it to attend to a gypsum leak on the C-line.

This line is dedicated to transporting gypsum from Foskor for dilution at the wastewater disposal system for expulsion offshore.

According to a media release just issued by the Office of the Chief Executive, immediately upon learning of the leak which occurred today (Sunday) ‘Mhlathuze Water instructed Foskor to immediately cease all discharge operations to allow for emergency repairs to occur on the line.

‘In line with its emergency response protocols, Mhlathuze Water has also notified key stakeholders of the incident; these include the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Ocean and Coast Unit at national and provincial levels, the local and district municipalities.

‘Mhlathuze Water has already sourced a super sucker to extract the excess the effluent back to the Foskor holding dams for dilution and discharge through the normal processes once the repair is completed.

‘Effluent samples have been taken for testing from the site of the spillage to determine the effluent levels.

‘Mhlathuze Water would like to reassure the public and all stakeholders that it remains committed to responsible environmental practices and no effluent discharge will be permitted on the affected pipeline up until such time that the repair has been satisfactorily effected.’
