Law enforcement agencies on alert about planned truck strike

LAW enforcement units countrywide have been instructed to activate their contingency plans to ensure the planned national truck shutdown is policed efficiently.

This after social media posts calling for a nationwide truck shutdown to begin today (Tuesday).

According to media reports, the All Truck Drivers Foundation (ATDF) called for the strike over foreign workers being employed in the sector while South African citizens go without jobs.

ATDF leader Sipho Zungu said that although he had seen the social media posts calling for the strike, he had nothing to do with it.

Many key routes were set to be targeted, including the N2 between Port Shepstone and Richards Bay.

After a lengthy virtual meeting today, the National Joint Operational Structure (NatJoints) said there would be zero tolerance for any intimidation against truck drivers.

NatJoints consists of various government departments within the security cluster.

‘Members of the South African Police Service and all law enforcement agencies will continue to apply fundamental policing principles, guided by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the Gatherings Act 1993 (Act 205 of 1993), as well the current State of Disaster Regulations,’ said the NatJoints statement.

‘Law enforcement will ensure there are no criminal activities and that the lives of law-abiding citizens are not put in danger.’

Late yesterday afternoon an interdict against the strike was granted by the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Meanwhile, there have been reports of a truck blocking the Higginson Highway in Durban this afternoon.
