Covid-19: Recoveries surpass active cases
With continued precautionary measures, there is every reason the recovery rate should continue to rise
SOUTH Africa’s coronavirus statistics may be increasing exponentially as we head towards the peak of infections, but there is another number rising rapidly by the day, to which little attention is being paid – the recovery rate.
Earlier this week, the number of recoveries surpassed that of the active Covid-19 cases.

As at 9am today (Friday, 24 July), total Covid-19 cases in South Africa had risen to 408 052.
Of these, 165 699 were active cases, 236 260 were recoveries, and 6 093 were deaths.
While those who have succumbed to the illness are mourned, the fact that the recovery rate had increased – in just 24 hours – by a bigger number than the country’s total active cases, should be cause for some optimism.
To give an overview, in the 24-hour period, the number of active cases had increased by 5 866, while the recovery rate had increased by 7 085.
As citizens countrywide continue to practise social distancing, basic hygiene and the wearing of masks, there is every reason for the recovery rate to continue to rise.
