IFP calls for a special corruption court

THE IFP has urged government to establish a special corruption court to urgently address the scourge of corrupt activities in KZN.
The party made this call after four managers in the Department of Education were suspended last week, allegedly in relation to the mismanagement of a sanitary towel distribution project.

IFP KZN spokesperson for education, Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa said even though they welcome the suspension of these managers, there is little to celebrate as no one has been arrested as yet.
‘This matter exposes massive corruption, and a careless spending culture, in total disregard of existing procurement regulations,’ said Madlopha-Mthethwa.
‘The haemorrhaging of public funds will do enormous damage to the country’s already struggling economy.
‘Actions speak louder than words. There are many investigations that have been conducted in KZN government departments but to date, no one has been arrested.’
She said a specialised corruption court would deal with the alleged transgressions of the Provincial Financial Management Act, Municipality Financial Management Act, other treasury regulations, as well as auditor general findings. She explained these could be fast-tracked by the court for swifter justice.
‘The law must be reviewed to ensure that those convicted of economic crimes suffer the greatest financial loss. All the proceeds from corruption must be repossessed by the state, and directed for public use.
‘We also demand that service providers illegally benefitting from a corrupt supply chain management pay back all the funds, and be blacklisted once and for all.’
The IFP is also calling for criminal charges to be laid against corrupt service provider directors.
With regards to the recent case involving Department of Education employees, she called on law enforcement agencies to criminally charge those involved in the looting of public funds.
‘We urge the KZN MEC for Education, Kwazi Mshangu, to ensure that there is no political interference in the investigation. People found guilty of the embezzlement of public funds must be named, shamed, and blacklisted,’ she said.
