Hijacking scam continues in uMkhanyakude district

Most of the stolen vehicles are taken across the border into Mozambique

POLICE urge the public, and especially business people, to be aware of the ongoing hijacking modus operandi used by criminals in the uMkhanyakude district.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, says most of the victims are business owners who receive calls requesting quotations.

On arrival in the area, the victims are directed to a secluded area by a gang member.

There they are confronted by armed men and robbed at gunpoint.

‘The locations of these robberies are usually far from the main road or police station, and it takes the victims hours to get assistance.

‘Most of the stolen vehicles are taken across the border into Mozambique,’ said Mbhele.

‘Business owners are advised that should they get a call-out for any form of service in the uMkhanyakude area, they should arrange to meet their clients at the nearest police station where the legitimacy of the call-out can be verified.’
