Speaking to the Zululand Observer on Thursday afternoon, DA Caucus Leader in the City of uMhlathuze Muzi Mtshali expressed satisfaction with Wednesday’s voting process, noting a positive voter turnout in DA strongholds.

“We are happy with the support we have received from voters because we were even able to secure a ward that had previously belonged to the ANC, which is Ward 1,” he said.

The ACDP’s Lumka Nyawose also noted a seamless voting process.

“We did not experience or observe any major challenges. Participating in the elections in itself is a challenge because you can never be certain of the outcome,” she said.

MK Party (MKP) uMhlathuze Sub-region spokesperson Bhekabathembu Mvelase also expressed delight with the support the party has received locally, although the final results are yet to be declared.

The MKP has reportedly secured 23 of the city’s 36 wards, with the IFP obtaining 6, the DA 5 and the ANC 2.

The results are yet to be declared by the IEC.

The proportional representation (PR) vote results are yet to be finalised, which will determine the final composition of the uMhlathuze municipal council.

The PR votes will determine whether one single party has an outright majority or whether the municipality will again be governed through a coalition.
