No crime relief in uMkhanyakude district

Sexual offences are still at a high although some numbers decreased

CRIME is still rife in most parts of the greater Zululand region, including uMkhanyakude district, according to the national crime statistics released recently.

Police Minister Bheki Cele released the 2019/2020 crime figures, which pinpointed KZN as the most dangerous province in the country owing to the high murder rate.

Local police stations such as Mtubatuba and Nkandla recorded 21 and 19 murder cases respectively.

As in previous years, the data indicated that sexual offences in the region were still at a high, although some numbers decreased compared to last year.

Common assault cases remained at a high in northern KZN, with 67 cases in Hluhluwe, 153 in Mtubatuba, 60 in Jozini and 22 in Nkandla.

Hluhluwe and Mtubatuba showed a decrease in rape cases with 48 and 34 cases respectively.

However, Jozini saw an increase of 21 rape reports with a total of 69, while 55 cases were recorded in Nkandla.

Predictably, local house robberies and commercial crimes remain at a high.

Overall, carjackings, commercial crime, driving under the influence of alcohol and drug-related crime contributed greatly to the high statistics.
