MANGUZI subsistence farmer Bhekuyise Shange has been recognised at the prestigious forestry awards for his excellence in sustainable plantation management.

Shange, who manages a mixed farm of timber and cattle, received an accolade in the Small Grower Operation category at the NCT Forestry’s annual Tree Farmer of the Year awards held recently on a virtual platform.

With the introduction of forestry, Shange scaled up his business and began farming timber commercially.

‘Realising that there is strength in numbers, he recruited other subsistence farmers and formed an association to farm timber on a commercial basis.

‘With technical and silviculture advice, he follows sound management practices and accesses markets through the co-operative,’ said the NCT.
