Toyota reveals Vitara-based SUV

The new Toyota Urban Cruiser was revealed by the Japanese car giant's Indian arm

TOYOTA has finally taken the wraps off a compact SUV the company has been teasing for a while now.

The new Toyota Urban Cruiser (for now that seems to be the new vehicle’s name), was revealed by the Japanese car giant’s Indian arm, and as it turned out, it’s basically a Suzuki Vitara.

To be more specific, the Vitara Brezza, which is sold in India and a slightly shorter version of the full-size Vitara which Suzuki sells here in SA.

Yes, apart from a Fortuner-inspired nose, the Urban Cruiser is all Vitara, a mix-and-match which happened because Toyota and Suzuki signed a partnership deal.

Even under the bonnet, the Toyota Urban Cruiser is a Suzuki with the much, much smaller Japanese company’s normally aspirated 1.5-litre unit that produces 77kW and 138Nm.

Here in SA, this 1.5 petrol unit does duty in the Suzuki Ertiga MPV as well as the Suzuki Ciaz.

Suzuki is also making the most of its partnership with Toyota and recently launched the Across SUV, a Toyota RAV4 in disguise, in parts of Europe.

Toyota here in SA has yet to reveal whether the Urban Cruiser will be imported to add even more variety to the brand’s local line-up, but seeing that so many of the cars on sale in SA are also offered in India, the chances are good.
