The purpose of the meeting was to enable arbitration stakeholders gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by CCMA users
DIFFICULTIES with processes during the Covid-19 pandemic, managing conflict in the workplace and the national minimum wage were among the topics discussed at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) user forum meeting in Richards Bay last week.
Attended by various workers’ unions, the purpose of the meeting was to enable arbitration stakeholders gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by CCMA users.

‘Although we are in the midst of a pandemic which has not only had a negative impact on our country’s economy, but also resulted in a huge number of job losses, the CCMA will, despite our own challenges, limited staff availability and backlog of cases, strive to deliver on its mandate of promoting social justice,’ said CCMA Regional Manager, Joanne Vermaak.
She said they continue to provide services during the Covid-19 pandemic through various online platforms.
‘The pandemic has not only forced us to face the challenges technology might present to some of us, but also embrace the technological changes it brings.
‘We encourage people to make use of the online platforms when referring disputes to the CCMA. ‘Our website records the process and all the relevant information.
‘Furthermore, we are conducting virtual hearings and scheduling cases at employers’ premises, which not only expedites dispute resolution but also ensures social distancing compliance,’ said Vermaak.
