Call to stop clogging up storm water drains
With stormwater eventually draining into waterways and then into main rivers or dams, dumped organic materials can have a harmful impact on plants and animals
WITH the rainy season approaching, the uMhlathuze Municipality has warned residents against ongoing polluting of storm water drains around the city.
Most drains are being clogged up by cooking grease, detergent, home improvement waste, oil filters, paint, fertilizers, pet waste and other materials.

With stormwater eventually draining into waterways and then into main rivers or dams, dumped organic materials can have a harmful impact on plants and animals in and around that water.
According to the municipality’s Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, with the summer season approaching, all drainage systems must be cleared.
‘We call upon community members to work with the city in making sure that drains are not blocked.

‘The municipality will play its part in cleaning the drains, but we urge people to deposit all refuse in our litter bins and skips at all times.
‘This also protects the environment we live in and it is crucial that we ensure our households and surroundings are kept clean,’ he said, adding that the city will be on standby for any eventuality of heavy rains and flash floods.
