It is used to remember those affected by suicide, to raise awareness, and to focus efforts on directing treatment to those who need it most.
In South Africa, the day follows under National Suicide Prevention Month which is September.
Mental health advocates, prevention organisations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness.
Suicide during the Coronavirus pandemic
Even though every year thousands of individuals die by suicide around the world, this year the number has drastically increased owing to the global coronavirus pandemic.
According to LifeLine Zululand Director Michelle Jewlal, since national lockdown was enforced in March, more people are in financial and personal anxieties which trigger suicidal thoughts.
‘Others have lost their jobs and it can cause severe depression which can lead to suicide.
‘More and more people are going through various crises and use suicide as part of giving up because they don’t see any way out.
‘It’s an easy escape and sometimes they believe they help those they are leaving behind,’ she explained.
With September being National Suicide Prevention month, Michelle has urged people to seek help.
She said some with suicide thoughts will go through a preparation phase.
‘Some start to make peace with others and tie up loose ends. This shows they are already preparing and we can always be on the lookout for such behaviour.
‘It’s also important not to seek help from friends or just anyone without proper training, but those in need of assistance to contact LifeLine Zululand for free counselling on 035 7892472 or the national crisis centre on 0861 322322.
