The total cargo handled is, however, an increase compared to the same period last year when 6.8 million tons were shifted.

Of the total tonnage moved last month, 56 461 tons were break bulk, 154 487 tons liquid bulk and 7 million tons dry bulk.

A decline was also recorded in the total twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers, with 273 TEUs shifted last month compared to 661 the previous month.

Of the 156 vessel arrivals with a gross tonnage of 5 721 807, 34 were tankers transporting oil, chemicals and liquefied petroleum gas.

‘We are encouraged by the levels of co-operation and compliance to our regulations by all transport operators across all modes.

‘Our ability to ensure safe mobility relies on this co-operation. We encourage our people to remain resilient and work with authorities in halting the spread of this pandemic,’ said Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula.
