NPO brings relief to struggling Nongoma families

A NONGOMA non-profit organisation has teamed up with various donors to assist rural communities in the area still suffering from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The national lockdown regulations which prohibited people from moving around to look for piece jobs have had a major impact and, although street vendors were eventually allowed to trade again, there were no customers.

The Okuhle Community Support Centre is working with independent companies to bring social relief to scores of destitute families.

The NPO’s chairperson, Prince Bonga Zulu, said they have been collaborating with various companies such as Hollard, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) and others to assist needy people in Nongoma and elsewhere.

‘Last Sunday we handed over 100 food parcels at the Nongoma taxi rank. Most of the beneficiaries were street vendors and trolley pushers operating in the town’s central business district.

‘Street vendors, especially elderly women, are there to earn an income to feed their families, but it is tough and they struggle to survive,’ said Zulu.

Last week the NPO also distributed food vouchers each worth R650 to 178 people in the Nongoma area.

‘This Sunday we donated 25kg bags of maize meal to more than 100 people, followed on Wednesday by 400 food parcels to destitute families.

‘We have also been to Mnambithi, Empangeni and Ulundi as well,’ Zulu said.
