Give your house a deep clean this spring

Top tips for the best spring clean

WITH the warmer weather approaching, spend this time giving your house the spring clean that it needs by following some of the useful tips listed below.

Start the process by mapping out a ‘plan of attack’, which allows for planning and organisation that will lead to you meeting your desired goals.

For example, you can do one room a day or decide to only do the bedrooms in a day and the other rooms on another day.

Once your plan is foolproof, move onto decluttering and tidying.

Before you actually start deep cleaning a desired space, go through all the goods in that room and decide what must stay and what must go.

People always have unnecessary dust collectors in their homes.

Once all the shelves, countertops, floor areas and surfaces in the room has been decluttered, organised and cleared, you can start cleaning.

A vacuum cleaner helps to clean all those hard to reach places that will usually be left out during a general clean.

Utilise all the vacuum tools and nozzles to get rid of all the dust and dirt.

Take your time to select the correct nozzle for reaching into crevices, to dust or for cleaning soft furnishings, upholstery or window dressings.

These nozzles are also ideal for cleaning out drawers and inside cupboards and cabinets.

When cleaning any cupboards, taking everything out before cleaning is essential.

This will allow for that deep clean and one can sort out as you repack the cupboard. It is vitally important to clean soft furnishings such as curtains, duvets, pillows and cushion covers during a spring clean.

By putting these items in the washing machine gives the room a fresh and clean smell and also helps get rid of dust and bed mites.

Cleaning all home appliances – from the fridge, to the freezer, oven, hob, microwaves, dishwasher and washing machine – need to be done as these items are used on a daily basis and are extremely dirty.

Ovens: Ideally you want to clean out all the grease and food residue ash off the surfaces, plates and inside the oven.

Microwaves: Microwaves can end up looking extremely grimy owing to the mixture of splatters and smells that are left inside after use.

It is pretty simple to clean a microwave. Simply combine one cup of water, with a lemon in a microwave-safe bowl, then add two tablespoon of white or apple cider vinegar to the mix.

Place it inside the microwave and turn it on high for several minutes until the mixture boils and the window steams up.

Let it cool for five minutes before removing the bowl.

Take out the turntable plate and put it in the dishwasher, and wipe down the inner cabinet of your microwave with a sponge.

Hobs: Hobs take a battering as they are used daily for cooking meals, so it is important to get all the grease and grime off it.

Fridges: Remove all food stored inside the fridge and place it in a cooler box before you begin cleaning. Remove all the shelves, door racks and vegetable drawers, and wash them thoroughly using warm water and antibacterial soap.

Give the inside of the fridge a good wipe down with the warm water and antibacterial soap before packing everything back into the fridge.

Freezers: Remove all food from the freezer and store it in the fridge while cleaning.

Remove all the drawers and wash them with warm, soapy water, removing any crumbs or food residue.

Make sure they are completely dry before returning them to the freezer. While they are drying, you can wipe down the inner cavity of the freezer, ensuring that you dry it thoroughly and leave no moisture or residue.

If you do not want to empty the entire freezer, then you can always clean one freezer drawer at a time, as all the food can then remain in the freezer.

Washing machines and dishwashers: Appliances that help you clean, also need to be cleaned once in a while.

Run the machines on the cleaning setting to some soap to get all the dirt out.
