1. Try pick a recipe early, giving you enough time to select a recipe that suits your skill level. A nostalgic recipe will usually bring about some happy memories.

2. Read over the recipe and and make a precise list of ingredients, checking you have the correct baking utensils. Ensure you understand all the baking terminology – beating, whisking and cutting are all very different mixing methods.

3. Get all the right ingredients, specialist ingredients have different alkalinity that react slightly differently, and the wrong one may compromise the texture of your baked goods.

4. Start with a clean kitchen to allow the process to go smoothly and for space to operate.

5. Grease or line your tins before you begin, and pre-heat your oven.

6. Measure all ingredients carefully, as baking relies on the chemical reactions between the ingredients in the recipe to achieve perfection.

7. Set up a bake-off with a friend, which will motivate you to get into the kitchen.

Baking is a great way to unwind, and provides some valuable family time, particularly on a rain weekend!
