Fishing boat loses power during competition

CREW members of a fishing boat had to be rescued when one of the boat’s motors lost engine power during a St Lucia fishing competition on Wednesday afternoon.

NSRI St Lucia station commander, Jan Hoffman, said the boat was in the the shoreline break and threatened to run aground in the rough waters.

‘Our Discovery Rescue Runner sea rescue craft was diverted from standing-by at the fishing competition, while a fellow fishing boat attended at the scene and transferred the crew of the casualty boat onto the fishing boat,’ said Hoffman.

‘On arrival on the scene, we found the skipper on board the casualty boat.

All fishing gear was stowed while we escorted and advised the skipper through the surf line safely onto the beach, with care taken to not capsize the casualty craft once beached.’

The NSRI tractor was used to recover the casualty boat and the remaining crew brought safely to shore.

There were no injuries, and the skipper and crew of the fellow fishing boat were commended for their assistance.
