Striking employees locked out of the Mondi premises in Alton have vowed to lay criminal charges against police who allegedly fired rubber bullets at them during a protest outside the gates this (Wednesday) afternoon.

Cell phone footage taken at the scene shows a small number of police members approaching the toy-toying protesters, possibly to disperse them.

Muffled shots can be heard and according to protesters, four of their unarmed group sustained bruises.

‘We were on the sidewalk not showing any form of provocation and some of those confronted by the police were in fact kneeling.’

The ‘no work, no pay’ strike over a salary dispute is in its third week after the workers rejected an offer of 4.1%.
