Murder of Mtubatuba environmentalist shocks leaders

The IFP has said it would be undertaking a fact-finding mission to the area

THE IFP in KZN has expressed its shock following the murder of environmental activist, Fikile Ntshangase, of Mtubatuba.

Ntshangase, who was the deputy chairperson of the Mfolozi Community Environmental Justice Organisation (MCEJO), was shot and killed at her home in Somkhele Reserve, near Mtubatuba, last Thursday.

IFP member of KZN Legislature and member of KZN Conservation and Environmental Affairs, Joshua Mazibuko, said reports indicate Ntshangase was murdered because of her pro-environment activities and opposition to mining operations in the area.

‘This is likely to exacerbate existing tensions and may ignite violence,’ Mazibuko said.

He said the community was divided on the mining issue, with one group supporting mining and another opposing it.

‘We urge leaders and the community to deal with this issue in a calm manner.’

Mazibuko added that the IFP would be undertaking a fact-finding mission to the area.
