Consumers urged to seek help for debt

The association said it has decided to embark on an awareness campaign

Cash-strapped consumers struggling to keep up with their monthly repayments, have been encouraged to seek debt counselling.

The National Debt Counsellors’ Association (NDCA) says it is working to change misconceptions which have deterred consumers from relying on the process.

‘Many people could have benefitted, but instead they had to try and manage their financial situation themselves, potentially getting deeper into difficulty and ultimately risking their homes and cars being repossessed,’ said NDCA Chairperson, Benay Sager.

Sager said the sector is highly regulated and has been proven to be effective.

To better inform the public about the process and to challenge the misperceptions, the association said it has decided to embark on an awareness campaign.

‘We face an unprecedented situation, where the Covid-19 lockdown has severely impacted an economy that was already in difficulty.
